Henry Watkins (1844-1922; WWW), archdeacon and canon, Durham, 1882-1922. Balliol Coll., Oxford; Bampton lecturer, 1890; professor of Hebrew, University of Durham; examining chaplain to bishop of Durham; a notoriously difficult colleague who struck fear into members of the Cathedral community in Durham, and whose obstructiveness in capitular meetings Henson had to take steps to prevent: Retrospect, I, 148-9; referred to in the Journal as iste Archdiaconus, or 'that archdeacon', iste being the contemptuous use of 'the' or 'that' in Latin; Club - Athenaeum.
