156th day
It being the Feast of the Epiphany, I celebrated at 8 a.m: 3 canons were present. Beyond writing many letters, attending Mattins and Evensong, and taking Marion for a walk, I did nothing. It is terrible how the days skip by without registering anything substantial. Lady Limerick sent me a book, with a very kind letter filled with New Year's Day wishes. She continues to lament my departure from Westminster, & no longer finds S. Margaret's tolerable. Dr Tait, surely as unlike as possible in type & training, writes to the same effect. We dined with the Bishop of Jarrow. Watkins & Lillingston with their wives made up the party. Our host's son, who is an assistant master at Winchester, and whose acquaintance I had made last July when I preached to the school, was there. He spoke with a proper enthusiasm of Winchester, while conceding the unique impressiveness of Durham.
