474th day
A cheerless dull day, damp and depressing. I sent cuttings of my Cambridge sermon to Olive and James Parker–Smith, and then addressed myself to the business of the "Great Chapter". Everybody was amiable, and everything went through without friction. I carried the following:
"That the Receiver (Dr Knowling) and Canon Lillingston be appointed a Committee of Chapter to assist the Dean in preparing a Manual of the Constitution for the guidance of the members of the Cathedral Foundation, and to consider what steps should be taken for editing & publishing the Cathedral statutes, & to report to the Chapter."
I also submitted a series of Regulations for the better ordering of the Cathedral Services, &, these having been amended, I declared my intention of issuing them from January 1st 1916. For residences the choices stand as follows:
January | Bishop of Jarrow | Also I announced my purpose of preaching throughout Lent, thus saving a sum of £25..4..0 which might be set against the sum of £50 voted for Morgan's education. The last was agreed to, as well as a sum of £12 to pay the balance on Morgan's school charges for last year. £92 seems too large a sum for schooling for one year. It is of course prohibitive for the poor. |
February | Lillingston | |
March | Cruickshank | |
April | Knowling | |
May | Sub–Dean | |
June | – | |
July | Lillingston | |
August | Knowling | |
September | Cruickshank | |
October | Sub–Dean | |
November | Dean | |
December | Bishop of Jarrow |

Old Canon Aitken of Norwich called, & I shewed him the house. Also Mrs Cummings came to get another note to the Sherburn doctor for her child. After dinner Commander Cooper called to explain the advent of a telegram which arrived this afternoon addressed to him here. He is employed at present in presiding over the construction of a submarine.
