1129th day
Again a glorious autumnal morning, early mist quickly passing before the sun. I was pleased to receive a well–written & politely phrased letter of thanks from the young papist whom I showed kindness to last Saturday (v. p.166). Good manners & good feeling are less common than they should be. At Mattins the Archdeacon re–appeared after five weeks absence.
I spent the morning over the Warden's Journal, which is disappointingly meagre. After Evensong I walked with Lillingston. The latest German air–raids have been the most destructive. Whether our raids have been as much so does not appear from the official reports. The Russians continue to blether, quarrel, & retreat. Penelope arrived.
