James William Lowther

James Lowther (1855-1949; ODNB), MP (C) Penrith 1886-1921, and speaker, House of Commons, 1905-21. Chaired speaker's conferences on electoral reform, 1916-17, and devolution, 1919; 1st Viscount Ullswater (1921); published A Speaker's Commentaries (2 vols., 1925). Henson dedicated a collection of his St Margaret's sermons, The Creed in the Pulpit (1912) to him, described as delivered in 'the Speaker's church'. See also Volume 75.
