Quinquagesima, March 1st, 1908.
Knox celebrated at 8 a.m. There were 23 comts.
At Mattins the congregation was not large, but it included the Speaker, Lord St Aldwyn, Col. Lockwood, Mr Carr–Gomm, Frank Pember, & uncle Charles. My sermon was hard to get through, especially as the Admiral was present. There were 82 comts at the midday celebration, & among them the Admiral and his brother. I gave to the former the MS. of my sermon.
I preached in the Abbey for Beeching, (bowled over by influenza), and afterwards, talking with the Sub–Dean in the cloisters, contracted a slight chill.
The evening was miserably wet; yet a moderate congregation assembled at S. Margaret's, including Lady Frances Balfour & a Presbyterian Divine; they came in to supper afterwards. I preached with some difficulty an old sermon. The "Dead March" was played after service: & the bell–ringers rang a half–muffled peal.
