3rd Sunday after Epiphany, January 26th, 1908.

The weather is milder, but still dull. There was a fair congregation in the Abbey at 10 a.m. including the Abp. of C. Inge preached well and briefly. I celebrated: among the Communicants I noticed Frank Pember & his wife, & Alfred Lyttelton & his wife.

Neil Malcolm & his wife, Pearce, & Gilbert came to lunch.

I preached to a very large congregation in the Abbey on the Conversion, an 'apologetic' sermon, long & dull, which was disturbed in its delivery by a drum & fife band.

Lord Wm Cecil turned up at 6.30 p.m. on the hypothesis that he was due to preach. I shewed him his own letter declining to do so, & then let him preach, not being greatly unwilling to reserve my own sermon until next Sunday. In spite of the wet weather (for it fell to rain as the day drew to its close) there was a considerable congregation.

Custard came to supper, & Mary Scott.
