Boxing Day, December 26th, 1906.

A letter from Canon Page Roberts, written from bed, where the reigning fiend Influenza had held him, asked me to preach in S. Peter's, Vere Street, next Sunday. I telegraphed an affirmative, and then went to the Sub–Dean, & begged him to take my place at S. Margaret's, which he promised to do.

A substantial piece of the cloister vaulting–ribs fell last night.

I celebrated the Holy Communion in Mr Geddes's room.

In the afternoon I attended carol–singing in the Abbey, and then went across to the Palace to inquire after the health of the Speaker & Sir Courtenay Ilbert, both of whom are down with Influenza.
