21st Sunday after Trinity, November 5th, 1911.
Westlake celebrated at 8 a.m. There were 17 comts.
There was a fair congregation at Mattins, but sadly few Members & no Speaker. It being 'Guy Fawkes Day' I preached a topical sermon on "Persecution', taking as my text two passages, Daniel iii.29? (which formed part of the 1st Lesson): & S. Lk. ix.54–56. Afterwards I celebrated. There were but 65 comts.
After lunch I went to the Leysian Settlement, & spoke to a men's meeting on 'Some Lessons of Guy Fawkes Day'.
At Evensong there was a fair congregation. I preached from Romans iii.7,8, taking occasion to discuss the famous principle ascribed to the Jesuits, & conspicuously applied in Gun–powder Plot: "The end justifies the means".
Harold & Elsie, Bob, Gilbert, Geordie, Linetta, & Mary came to supper together with Mr Bailie, a colonist, who brought me a letter of introduction from young Henry, who is now in Brazil.
