The Henson Journals

Violet Rosa Markham

Violet Markham (1872-1959; ODNB), social campaigner and public servant who converted to Christianity on hearing Henson's sermons at Westminster (see her autobiography, Return Passage (1953), 90-1); developed a strong friendship with Henson, continuing until his final years (see Markham papers); shared Henson's opposition to women's suffrage before recanting her former beliefs in 1916; however, discounted the claim of some suffragists that women would transform society, and remained critical of the use of violence for political ends (Return Passage, 98-103); CH, 1917.
