Richard Burdon Haldane
Richard Haldane (1856-1928; ODNB), viscount Haldane (1911), politician, educationist, and philosopher, rooted in the Idealist thought he had imbibed as a student at Gottingen; MP (L) Haddingtonshire, 1885-1911; secretary of state for war, 1905-12, responsible for extensive army reform; lord chancellor, 1912-15; lost office when Asquith formed his coalition government in May 1915 due especially to campaign in the press against his German sympathies; lord chancellor in the first Labour government, 1924; his posthumously published autobiography much admired by Henson: Henson to Elizabeth Haldane, 16 Feb. 1929, HHH109/70.
