We motored to Much Wenlock (50 miles) and there I confirmed 40 candidates in the parish church. After the service we had tea with Lady Catherine Milnes–Gaskell at Wenlock Abbey. We reached the Palace about 8 p.m.
The debate on the 2nd Reading of the Enabling Bill began last night in the House of Lords. On the whole the speeches both of the Archbishop and of Lord Haldane were disappointing. I had expected something better from both. The debate was adjourned until June 24th. The Bishop of Carlisle has a long letter in the "Times" against the Bill. It presents all the distinctive merits and also the demerits of the writer. Save as making public another episcopal opponent of the Bill, the letter will not be of much service.

These 9 bishops, of whom but 5 have seats in the House are more or less hostile to the Bill. The defection of the bishops of Liverpool, Durham, Ripon, Peterborough and Chelmsford has made it possible to pretend that the Bill is not an affair of the High Church faction. The Evangelicals are always a rotten stick to lean on.
