3rd Sunday in Advent, December 15th, 1907.

George Mackarness and I went to Church for the 8 a.m. service. I celebrated, & there were 17 commts.

There was a moderate congregation at Mattins, including, however, Lord St Aldwyn, Alfred Lyttelton, Carr–Gomm, Bailward, & Arthur Coleridge. I preached on 'The Christian Ministry', and afterwards discussed the sermon with A. L., whom I fell in with outside the Church.

George brought his fiancée, Miss Dawson, to lunch. In the evening I preached for the 3rd time the sermon on 'Associations in Judgement'.

The long delay in appointing a bishop to Chichester has ended at last. Ridgeway, who but 2 years since was made Dean of Carlisle is preferred again. It is an appointment which is beneath discussion, and can only be registered.

Lord Kelvin died, and is most rightly to be buried in the Abbey.

On Thursday, 19th Dec., I attended a meeting of Westminster Health Society, & listened to a very sensible speech from Miss Haldane. Afterwards we walked home together. She told me that her brother was much opposed to launching an Old Age Pensions Scheme without waiting for the Poor Law Commission's Report. But Asquith is rushing the Govt in the other direction.
