The Henson Journals

John Percival

John Percival (1834-1918; ODNB), broad churchman and Henson's predecessor at Hereford. Queen's Coll., Oxford; headmaster of Rugby, 1887-95; strong supporter of the Workers' Educational Association, founded 1903; bishop of Hereford, 1895-1918, whose unpopularity Henson attributed to his 'national rather than diocesan' sphere of interest and influence - 'educational rather than ecclesiastical' - and his obtrusive, Liberal politics: Retrospect, I, 173.
