Ash Wednesday, February 13th, 1918.

1290th day

I celebrated in the Cathedral at 8 a.m. and attended the Commination Service at 11 a.m. After this I went into the Cathedral School, and addressed the boys. The Headmaster – the Revd John Henson – seems a competent man. Ella and I spent the afternoon in looking at the Palace, & making some arrangements. I wrote to Mr Prothero, the Sanitary Inspector, asking him to inspect the drains, & I gave permission for an auction of the late Bishop's furniture to proceed in the Palace grounds.
