19th Sunday after Trinity, October 22nd, 1911.

It rained all night, & was still raining heavily when I went to Church for the early service. Only 11 communicants.

A hurricane came on suddenly about 10.30 a.m.: & had the effect of stopping the rain while inducting annoyances of its own. The congregation in S. Martin's was large but far less than might have been expected if the weather had been favourable. I preached to the Navy League from Amos ix.7, 8. Outside the Church two ancient mariners – Admirals Freemantle & Blomfield– thanked me warmly for the sermon.

At Eventide the rain fell again with alarming vehemence. However there was a considerable congregation in the Abbey, when I preached on 'Patriotism'. The sermon had been carefully prepared, but it fell flat: & disappointed me in all respects.

The M.S. of the morning's discourse was sent (at the Editor's request) to the "Church Family Newspaper". The M.S. of the evening's oration went to the 'Christian World Pulpit'.

On Tuesday (Oct. 24th 1911) I attended the Prayerbook [sic] Revision Ctee. We had a brisk discussion of the Rubric after the Confirmation Service, & only carried the amended rubric by 12 votes to 10. Burrows announced a change of opinion induced, he said, by the Bishop of Hereford's action. I entertained at dinner – Stocks, Furneaux, Worlledge, Robinson & Deane.

On Thursday, Prebendary Nevison Loraine lunched with me, & visited the Abbey under my guiding.

I attended the service of the C.E.M.S. Lang preached.

I received from Trollope the balance of the Coronation stand money viz: £574.6.0.

Inge writes to tell me that his Wife has presented him with a daughter: & to ask me to be her Godfather.

On Saturday Oct. 28th 1911.], I attended the Conference of clergy & doctors. Sinclair never turned up, so I took the chair. We amended the Committee's Report, and adopted the Resolutions re–appointing it on a permanent basis with the Dean as Chairman.

I dined with the Dean & Mrs Ryle.

Ella returned from Scotland.
