Finchale Priory, a thirteenth-century Benedictine foundation, was a dependency of Durham Priory and Cathedral. Situated in a peaceful, wooded setting on the banks of the River Wear four miles north of Durham, most of its buildings were destroyed after its dissolution in 1538.
