296th day

The weather has changed for the worse, & it is now cold and gloomy. I removed my type–writer & my papers into the little study, & there worked again at the lecture – a tiresome proceeding. Cumming–Bruce & his wife came in to lunch. A party of the wounded soldiers, from the little hospital in the Bailey, came to tea, & afterwards went over the Cathedral with me. They are very simple men, but quite candid & honest. After dinner Gee brought in two friends to see me, Mr Grylls, the painted glass manufacturer, and the Architect of the Board of Works Commissioners, who had come to Durham in order to inspect Finchale. The latter was both a pleasant, and a well–informed man. They were shown over the Deanery, & expressed much admiration of the ceiling in the King's Room.
