John Buchan (1875-1940; ODNB), Scottish author, and barrister, publisher and public servant, with close Oxford connections; MP (C), Scottish Universities, 1927-35; Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, 1935; governor-general, Canada, 1935-40; a Church of Scotland elder at St. Columba's Church, London, and in Oxford; high commissioner to the general assembly of the Church of Scotland, 1933-4; author of novels, biographies, histories and 'thrillers', notably The Thirty-nine steps (1915); works mentioned by Henson include Nelson's history of the war, 24 vols (Feb. 1915-July 1919) in 50,000 word instalments; Some eighteenth-century byways (1908); A book of escapes and hurried journeys (1922); and, with George Adam Smith,The Kirk in Scotland, 1560-1929 (1930).
