Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901; ODNB), clergyman and prolific biblical scholar; translator (with F. J. Hort) of the Greek New Testament, and contributor to the Revised Version of the Bible (both 1881); a Christian socialist; first president of the Christian Social Union, 1889; as bishop of Durham, 1890-1901, established close relations with miners' union and other bodies of workmen, and in 1892 famously mediated a settlement of a miners' strike.
