16th Sunday after Trinity, September 30th, 1906.

A perfect autumnal day, only a little too warm. Canon Bigg preached at 10 a.m. on the episode in S. John iv. – a charming & characteristic sermon. I celebrated, and, as it was the first Sunday in term, the Westminster Boys received the Communion – a profoundly moving and consolatory spectacle. The Sub–Dean came to lunch.

In the afternoon I preached on behalf of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. There was a very large congregation, and I begged with all my might, but the offertory only amounted to £27.

The Church Congress held its sessions at Barrow–in–Furness in the first week of October. I had undertaken to read a paper on 'The Training of the Clergy in Reading & Preaching' but I cried off on the score of my throat, and my paper was read for me by Beeching.
