Samuel Wilberforce (1805-73; ODNB), bishop of Oxford, 1845-69, and Winchester, 1869-73. Oriel Coll., Oxford; prominent critic of liberal theology; high churchman though with limited sympathy for Tractarianism; known as 'soapy Sam' as one of the greatest public speakers of his day.
