Church of England Temperance Society (C.E.T.S.)
The Church of England Temperance Society was founded in 1862 to enhance the Church's support for temperance reform, on which nonconformist churches had hitherto taken the lead. Queen Victoria became its patron in 1875. In 1919, the bishop of London - Arthur Winnington-Ingram - led a nationwide campaign to re-establish the society in the wake of its insolvency.
