3rd Sunday after Easter, April 17th, 1910.
I went to S. Margts, & assisted Knox at the Holy Commn. There were 44 comts, including a good proportion of the newly confirmed.
Llewelyn Davies preached in the Abbey at the morning service. His sermon was very pleasant to hear – scholarly, reverent, & admirably expressed – an old world discourse such as Maurice might have delivered half a century since. His voice, though feeble, carries well. At luncheon he was most vivacious and interesting.
At the afternoon service the Abbey was well–filled. In the stalls I noticed the Archbishop of Canterbury. I preached from S. Luke XIII.23, 24, "Christ's treatment of questioners". After service Mrs Glassford Bell & James Parker Smith came in to tea.
I went to St Margaret's at 7 p.m. and heard Donaldson preach for the C.E.T.S. He preached well enough, but of course his argument was the familiar total–abstinence one, of which I cannot admit the validity.
