Thursday, May 8th, 1930.

Pattinson and I motored to Gateshead, where I confirmed 94 persons in a dingy little ugly church, St Alban's, Heworth. There was a fair ratio of males to females, and everybody was very attentive. So I was not ill–pleased. The rain which had threatened before the service, was falling with some vehemence afterwards. This was unfortunate for the female candidates, who had some distance to walk in their white robes.

The Salvation Army writes for permission to publish the sermon which was broadcast from York Minster on Sunday.
