Friday, May 9th, 1930.

A grateful letter from Mrs Elliott tells me that Derek has given her a golden account of his visit here, and told her that he is to have another year at school. She expresses herself as well pleased with this arrangement.

The Church Times and the Guardian give prominence to my pronouncement in the 'Bishoprick', both are respectful, but neither is approving!

Ella and I motored to Durham, where we attended the meeting of the Preventive & Rescue Association.

I received from the Secretary of the Durham Colleges the Council's request that, as Visitor of the University, I would sanction some changes of the constitution. The reasons for the proposal being in my judgement adequate. I gave my approval as requested. This is the first occasion on which I have been required to act in my official character as Visitor.

The weather continues extremely cold. Yesterday there was snow at Muggleswick. Happily the apple–blossom is not yet sufficiently advanced to be injured.
