I wasted the day in preparing a sermon for the Freemasons of Gateshead. The Archdeacon of Auckland and his legal comrade came to lunch. I walked in the Park with Reggie Smith. He has been working as a "Bush Brother" in Australia, and gives a disconcerting account of the Australian Church. Gross immorality appears to be by no means uncommon among the clergy, and to be very lightly regarded. Some allowance must be made for his evident discord with his Bishop, but the picture is an ugly one.
