I breakfasted in bed, and did not descend from my bedroom before 11.30 a.m. ̶ pretty good for a newly–fledged Palatine!
We returned to Hereford after lunch arriving about 6.45 p.m. There was a pile of letters, mostly congratulations.
The "Church Times" did not print the letter, signed by the Dean, the 2 Archdeacons, & 19 out of the 22 rural deans, but inserted another insulting paragraph, affecting to doubt the authenticity of the letter, and belittling its significance! Gee's letter of protest appears with a tail of sneering editorial comments!
At all costs a Liberal Bishop must be made out to be a bad bishop–that is the rule on which "Catholicks" must needs proceed! It may be extraordinarily unjust and injurious to the individual, but then it is "ad majorem gloriam Dei", and that covers all!
