"A slow secular improvement of outward conditions though we need not despise it, interests & awakens us less, pays less honour to our spiritual nature than the discovery of eternal conditions, underlying those of time, the prospect of a joy not of earth crowning the earthly struggle."
Llewelyn Davies. 'Social Questions' p.53
I spent most of the day in preparing for a sermon next Sunday on the duty of Christians in the sphere of economics. In the afternoon I attended a meeting in the Town Hall in aid of the Association for helping the blind, and made a speech. There was a sharp fall of snow in the course of the afternoon. Sir Robert Lighton called, and had tea in my study. I dined with Dr Maples & there met Professor Cox, who had come to deliver the Gilchrist Lecture on "The Colours of the Soap Bubble". I presided at the Lecture, & was pleased to see the Town Hall completely filled. The artisan, for whom all these educational devices are adopted was as usual conspicuous mainly by his absence!
