There seems to be a real danger lest, by attempts to introduce equality, the complicated social system which at present exists may be so disorganised that the mechanism of production wd be put out of order, & that the effect wd be to diminish the aggregate of goods in the community & reduce rather than increase the share of the very poor.

I worked at the Cathedral sermon. The Ordination candidates finished their examination by 5 p.m. & went away save Ramsay who stayed the night. I had a very rudely expressed letter from Moore of St Peter, whose vanity is sorely mortified at finding himself included in the same category of lawlessness with his neighbour at All Saints. He will no doubt pour out his grievance into the hospitable columns in the local paper. I probably under–estimate the strength of the party passions of these provincials. My letter appeared in the Times.
