After breakfast Dr Harford took his departure. I attended Mattins in the Cathedral, where the solemn two minutes pause of recollection was made according to the King's desire at "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it being the anniversary of the Armistice. There is something more than a suspicion of superstition in this emphasis on the recurrence of the number eleven.
I called on Beattie and found him rather dilapidated. Then the ordination candidates began to arrive, and after tea had their first paper. Five made appearance.
1. Charles Henry Scott B.A., Queen's College, Oxford.
2. Martin Custance B.A., St Chad's Hall, Durham.
3. Norman Stanley Kidson B.A., Queen's College, Cambridge.
4. Harold A. Ramsay B.A., Wadham College, Oxford.
5. Selby Lennie B.A., St John's College, Durham.
After dinner I examined the 3 last in their "Anglican classic" viva voce. One took Hooker & the two others Jewel. I cannot say that any of them impressed me as brilliant, but they had made an effort to get some acquaintance with their author. That is something.
