Still the frost, and a rather thicker fog. The day was spent in Convocation. We began with a windy motion about industrial trouble moved in a set speech by the Bp. of Peterborough, & seconded by the Bp. of Lichfield. I thought this was probably mischievous,as the papers announce this morning that the miners have refused the very reasonable proposals of the Govt, so I hastily drafted an amendment, & moved it in a speech of some vigour, which was on the whole well received. The Bishop of Birmingham seconded, & eventually my amendment was passed as an addendum to the aforesaid windy motion. I lunched with Bevan at the Arundel. In the afternoon we debated the proposals about better relations with the Nonconformists. The Bishop of Winchester proposed them, & was seconded by the Bishop of Chelmsford. Gore opposed in a vigourous speech, & I moved the adjournment of the debate. Then I dined with Lady Londonderry & had much gossip about Durham. It would seem that there is not precisely a happy Family at Durham Cathedral.
