I spent the morning in working at the Anson Memoir – a curiously hopeless proceeding. After lunch Ella and I walked together for an hour. Then I worked at the Advent Lectures. Knight & his wife arrived about 7 p.m. He seems evidently disposed to contemplate "retirement into the country"; & his wife is evidently pleased with the notion. A letter from Beattie arrived this morning telling me that he had written to the Dean of Windsor accepting S. Martin's. Since writing he has telegraphed as stated above. The question now is whether he received Mrs Beattie telegram before he had communicated his change of mind to the D. & C. of Windsor.
