1494th day
Another pouring wet day. William was reported to be down with influenza, and so also the other lad who acts as chauffer. So I decided to abandon my journey to Church Stretton, & sent a telegram announcing my decision to Mr Wood Acton. I applied myself to that wretched lecture for King's College, and made but little progress. Mr LLewelyn, the Vicar of Clodock, came to see me. After lunch I walked for an hour on the river bank. The effect of the rain in swelling the stream was very apparent. A fisherman, with whom I held converse, said that he had known the river rise as much as 15 feet at short notice. Mr Latimer Jackson's book "The Problem of the Fourth Gospel" is a very lucid and well–arranged presentation of the relevant facts. It is difficult to understand how reasonable & candid divines can continue to ignore them.
