I considered with the Forester the state of the garden, & ordered him to remove the old holly, and the alder trees, & to make a bed of rhododendrons backed by a laburnum, and some lilacs. He will replace the holly with a silver birch. After lunch I showed the Judge and his Marshall, de Vere, over the cathedral, and then attended Evensong. The 'Church Family Newspaper' arrived with my signed article in answer to Gore. It reads rather savagely: & will make many people furious, but it does go to the root of the whole matter. A letter from Reggie Woodyear tells me that that gentle, almost girlish boy is in camp, breathing slaughter against the Germans! Ernest Rudling, the least warlike of youths, is now an officer, & writes ecstatically of his work! There are but typical of thousands, whom the War is transforming. After dinner I wrote to Mary Radford in reply to her Birthday letter.
