The Serbians are plainly in extremis. In spite of all the eloquence of Guildhall Banquets another little people perishes unhelped. It is a humiliation which pierces one's heart. But the area of the Tragedy extends daily. Greece & Roumania are on the fence, & seem about to get down on the German side! I did nothing but write a part of a sermon for Wynyard (!) but my brains are just now at their worst. After lunch I walked & talked with Cruickshank mainly in the cloisters, for the rain made a walk outside unattractive. Then I attended Evensong: Penelope, that Suffragette–woman's child, came to visit us. We dined at the Castle with the Judge. The moon lit up Palace Green & its buildings magnificently. Jack Boden writes to say that he now meditates talking Holy Orders.
