Caröe went off to town by the 8.20 a.m. express. I wrote a little sermon for the troops, & then had interviews with my colleagues on the difficult question of the Cathedral architect. Mr Watts from Witton Gilbert called to beg me to consider his son for a chapter living: he stayed to lunch.
