320th day

I presided at a meeting of the Chapter. We discussed at some length the position of Macartney as 'consulting architect', and finally decided to appoint an Architect, leaving that position unaltered. We hope thus to avoid any embarrassing entanglements of barbed wire in the shape of professional etiquette. It was agreed that Caröe was the inevitable man for Architect. Ella & I lunched with the Salvins, & afterwards saw their very charming garden. Mrs Tucker & her son came to see me with reference to the monument for the late Bishop. They have set their hearts on a Celtic cross, which I abhor in that situation, but I must presumably yield the point. Caröe returned from town by the late train.
