The elections to the King's Scholarships were made and announced. I was distressed to notice that the three choir–boys – Davis, Abbey, and Morgan – were at the bottom of the examiner's list. I laboured at the Sermon for several hours in the afternoon. Mrs Quirk had to be rather hurriedly removed to Newcastle in order to be operated on for appendicitis.
