I made a start on a sermon for Oxford. The subject is, 'The Influence of War on Religion', and the thesis maintained is that that influence is mainly bad. I did not make much progress, but something is gained in having chosen texts and made a start. Several "Mothers' Union" ladies came to lunch: afterwards I took Knowling for a walk: & then attended Evensong. The old parson from Witton Gilbert came to show me a very fine stone axe which had been found in his parish. I suggested that he should present it to the Chapter Library, a proposal which he asked time to consider.
