Tuesday, March 17th, 1914.

I spent the morning in an inspection of the prebendal houses now occupied by Mrs Simey & the Deaconesses in order to ascertain how far it might be possible to divide them into smaller houses for the use of the minor canons. Mr Wood, the architect, accompanied Bishop Nickson, Bayley, and myself in this business.

Then I wrote to Lord Londonderry in answer to a letter which he sent me a week ago asking me to subscribe the "British Covenant". I said that I could not do so partly because I objected to the practice of signing 'covenants' pledging the signatories to adopt certain action in certain contingencies: &, partly, because the terms of this particular covenant were such that I could not sign. I sent a copy of my letter to Lord Durham, inviting his opinion on my position as stated therein.
