Thursday, February 20th, 1913. Bishopthorpe.

The business of the Lower House ended yesterday, but, in my homeless condition, I was not eager to expedite my return to Durham. So I decided to continue here until tomorrow, as had been arranged.

Before the two layman [sic] – the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, and the man from Manchester – took their departure, I had much talk with them about the Houses of Laymen, which I maintained were futile at best, & might be mischievous, and the Question of Divorce. I asked them whether they thought that the general opinion of Church–going laymen supported the Bishops & Clergy in respect to marriage with Deceased Wife's Sister, & Marriage of the Innocent Party. Both assured me that they were certain that it did not.

I wrote letters all the morning, & then went in to York, & lunched with the Bps. at the Residentiary's House. Then I visited the truly magnificent Cathedral, which impressed me greatly. Then I walked back to the Palace, & spent the rest of the day pleasantly with Lang & Woolcombe.
