~~'While were talking of the ill state the church was in, I was struck to hear a prince of his course of life so much disgusted at the ambition, covetousness, & the scandals of the clergy. He said, if the clergy had done their part, it had been an easy thing to run down the nonconformists: but, he added, they will do nothing, & will have me do everything: & most of them do worse than if they did nothing.'~~

Burnet on Charles II. in 1667. "History of his own time" vol. I. p. 475.

I dined with the Goldsmith's Company as the guest of Sir John Wolfe Barry. It was the dinner at the Trial of the Pyx. The plate displayed was of great value & interest. Robert Mowbray was there: & Phelps of Oriel.

When we came away a box was given us – a nice oak box filled with sweet–meats.
