~~It's a fond imagination that Religion should extinguish Reason; whenas Religion makes it more illustrious and vigorous: & they that live most in the exercise of Religion, shall find their reason most enlarged.~~
Ibid. p. 186.
I attended a meeting of the Colonial Church Society, a congregationalist venture. The Lord Mayor, a large facetious man immensely enjoying his pomp, presided. I made a speech which was very well received. The Egyptian Hall was crowded, great part of the audience being compelled to stand. We can't get such meetings, though we stack the platform with bishops & peers!!
