1st Sunday in Lent, February 13th, 1910.

A milder finer day. At 8 a.m. there were but 15 communicants. At Mattins the congregation was fair for this time of year; & the Offertory good, over £16.
In the afternoon I went to Crouch End, and gave an Address on 'Liberty' to a considerable congregation. The Rev Silas Hocking came in to the Vestry afterwards to shake hands with me! Gilbert & Reggie accompanied me.
At Evensong there was a large congregation. I preached on the 'Temptation of Christ'. After the Benediction we sang the Story of the Cross.
On Thursday, Feb: 17th, I read a paper on 'The Unity of the Church' to the clergy of the West Ham Rural Deanery. On the whole I was agreeably disappointed in their attitude.
In Friday's "Times" appeared a report of Lord Halifax's speech in the 'Church House' to the E.C.U. containing a rude attack on me. I sent a short letter in reply, which appeared in the 'Times' of Saturday, 19th Feb. The same evening we attended the Wimborne House Reception to meet the P.M.
