I am 46 years old today – a middle–aged man, and beginning to feel like one. There was a meeting of the Chapter, which filled the time before lunch. In the afternoon, I gave a lecture for the Churchmen's Union in the S. Martin's Vestry Hall. Papillon was in the Chair. The subject was "The development of Episcopalian Theory within the National Church since the Reformation". Linetta & Mary presented me with a dog, which immediately fell into distemper!
The 'Seven' dined here. Only the Bishop of Barking, Lake, Swallow, & Marsden came. They presented me with a 'Swan Fountain Pen' on the occasion of my Birthday.
N.B. The dog died on Tuesday morning.
