Passion Sunday, April 5th, 1908.
A cold raw morning with a fine rain at intervals. Knox celebrated at 8 a.m. There were 30 commts.
The congregation at Mattins reflected the weather: it was bad, but not so bad as I feared. My sermon was on S. Luke VII.29, 30 "The discipline of repentance".
I celebrated the Holy Communion afterwards. There were 70 commts. Returning to the house we were caught in a tempest of hail & rain; & had to change clothes.
Violent showers of hail & rain occurred at intervals almost up to the time of evensong: in the circumstances the congregation was larger than I expected. Raleigh & his brother–in–law Simpson were in Church.
Douglas Eyre came to supper, & Signorina.
