4th Sunday in Advent, December 22nd, 1907.

There were 12 cts at 8 a.m. including Harold and me.

At Mattins there was a better congregation than I expected. Inter alios, Lord S. Aldwyn, Ian Malcolm, Captn Butler, Cecil Chapman, Sir Geo. Bartley, & Arthur Coleridge were present. I introduced into my sermon a brief eulogy of Lord Kelvin.

A large party at lunch. Gen. Smith & his daughter (who are staying here for the Indian Mutiny dinner tomorrow), the new P.C. Charles Parker, Lady Craik, Helen Stewart, Miss Barber, Harold, & Gilbert, and Anthony Brown.

Afterwards the two boys accompanied me to Whitfield's where I gave an address on 'Peace in the Church'. There was a numerous assembly of men, perhaps 1200. They listened very well, & applauded loudly at the end, though much that I said was clearly unfamiliar and unpalatable.

I preached at Evensong in S. Margaret's where there was a large congregation, including Raleigh, who came in to supper. Custard & Douglas Eyre were also here.
