26th Sunday after Trinity, November 24th, 1907.

I celebrated at 8 a.m.: there were 18 comts, including Beeching, who had found the reigning minor canon's ceremonalising too trying at the Abbey. The atmosphere was 'nipping & eager', but there was compensating brightness.

The congregation at Mattins was disappointingly small, but it included Lord S. Aldwyn, Alf. Lyttelton, & Sir Ed. Russell. I preached a sermon of contrast, 'Ecclesiastes & Christ'.

Then I gave 8 of the choir–boys signed copies of the printed letter to take to their parents.

At Evensong there was but a poor muster. I assume that the sudden coldness of the weather explains the fact. I preached from the second lesson, S. John v. 31–36.

Miss Scott, Signorina C., Custard & a friend, Gilbert & George were my guests at supper.
