Trinity Sunday, June 18th, 1905.

18 years ago I was ordained in Cuddesdon Church.

What have I done? and what have I become?

"God be merciful to me, the Sinner".

I celebrated at 8 a.m.; when there were 37 communicants.

  • Lord, many times I am aweary quite
  • Of mine own self, my sin, my vanity –
  • Yet be not Thou, or I am lost outright,
  • Weary of me.
  • And hate against myself I often bear,
  • And enter with myself in fierce debate:
  • Take Thou my part against myself, nor share
  • In that just hate.
  • Best friends might loathe us, if what things perverse
  • We know of our own selves, they also knew:
  • Lord, Holy One! if Thou who knowest worse
  • Shouldst loathe us too!

There was a large congregation, mainly composed of tourists, at Mattins. I preached on Rom. I. 16 & my MS. was filched from me by a reporter.

Accompanied by Harold, I went to S. James's Clerkenwell, and preached to the Watch & Clock-Makers' Pension Society. It was the occasion of their annual Sermon, and the Mayor & Corporation of Finsbury attended in state. I preached for 32 minutes from the text, 1. Tim. V. 8.

I preached again at Evensong.
